Je'Nita Lane

Je’Nita Lane’s journey to owning the historic State Theater began with her love for event planning. She first made waves with her daughter’s Sweet 16 and later an epic 18th birthday celebration. These events created such a buzz that even adults wanted to attend, inspiring Je’Nita to launch “Soul Session”—a series of sophisticated nights featuring live soul music by everyone's favorite soulful artists from yesteryear, great food, and grown-up vibes.

The success of Soul Sessions meant Je’Nita was renting venues nonstop. While booking the State Theater for one of these events, the owner said, “You should buy the theater and make it yours.” With faith and determination, she did just that. Today, J. Lane Theater is a thriving community hub for concerts, proms, private celebrations, cultural events, and youth programs, blending historic charm with modern experiences.

The State Theater

A Historic Gem in Albany Georgia

The State Theater

What was once a symbol of division is now a space for unity, creativity, and cultural celebration. Through concerts, tribute shows, acting camps, memorial services, and community events, J. Lane Theater honors the past while creating a future where everyone belongs. It stands as a living testament to Albany’s resilience, artistic spirit, and the power of change.

Located in the heart of downtown Albany, the State Theater is more than just a venue—it’s a cultural landmark with deep roots in the community. Opened in 1945, this mid-century Art Deco theater has stood the test of time, transitioning from a classic single-screen movie house to a vibrant hub for live performances, local events, and youth arts programs.

For decades, the State Theater has been a cornerstone of entertainment, creativity, and connection. Generations of Albany residents have walked through its doors to experience film, music, theater, and community events that reflect the spirit of the region. Whether it was catching the latest movie release in the 1950s or watching a child take the stage during a modern-day acting recital, the State Theater has long been a place where memories are made.

However, the story of this theater is rich in history. When it first opened in the 1940s, segregation laws meant that Black patrons were not allowed in the main seating area—they were forced to sit in the balcony and enter through separate doors. This painful chapter reflects the realities of its time.

Je’Nita not only purchased the theater, but she also fought to change its name to J. Lane Theater, transforming its identity and purpose. The very building that once excluded Black patrons is now proudly owned by Je’Nita Lane, a Black woman whose vision is rooted in inclusion and progress.

Through concerts, tribute shows, acting camps, memorial services, and community events, J. Lane Theater honors the past while creating a future where everyone belongs. It stands as a living testament to Albany’s resilience, artistic spirit, and the power of change.
